Stephen Scourfield is a regular public speaker and presenter on writing, photography, travel, cultures, landscape issues and makes appearances as an after-dinner speaker.

Beautiful Witness was launched in a theatre on November 23, 2013, with a one-hour performance with musicians Thea Rossen and Jesse Deane. They composed, arranged and played music to accompany the author reading his way through Oman, Yukon, Lesotho and Italy — and giving glimpses of his childhood and his own personal story.

Words-and-music performance, The Luthier

Based on the novella The Luthier in Unaccountable Hours, a musical performance takes audiences through the life of Alton Freeman, who makes stringed instruments. His life is themed by Johann Sebastian Bach’s Partitas and Sonatas, just as this performance is.

Stephen Scourfield reads from The Luthier, taking the audience through the full story, accompanied by either a violinist or classical guitarist, playing music from the story.

This 45-minute words-and-music performance has been given at:

• The University Club of Western Australia, with a three-course dinner and accompanying exhibition of sculptures made by artist Virginia Ward from luthier Scott Wise’s offcuts. This was a key performance for the Winter Arts Festival 2012. Performed with violinist Sophie Edelman.

• Bookcaffe Swanbourne book launch. Performed with violinist Sophie Edelman.

• Karrakatta Club. Performed with violinist Sophie Edelman.

classical guitarist William Yeoman.
